How Long Does the All-on-4 Dental Implant Procedure Take? What to Expect During Recovery

If you're considering All-on-4 dental implants, one of the first questions you probably have is:

How long does the procedure take, and how long will I be recovering?

The good news is that All-on-4 is designed to restore your smile much faster than many people expect. In many cases, patients leave our office with a beautiful new set of fixed teeth the very same day.

Here's what you can expect throughout the process.

Consultation and Planning

Every smile starts with a thorough consultation. During your first appointment(s) before any surgery, we'll:

  • Perform a comprehensive dental examination
  • Take digital X-rays and 3D CBCT imaging
  • Evaluate your bone and gum health
  • Discuss your smile goals
  • Create a customized treatment plan

This visit usually lasts about 60 minutes and allows us to determine if All-on-4 is the best solution for your needs. Once we have our records for treatment, we can typically plan your surgery as soon as 2–3 weeks later. These records allow us to design your smile, your bite, and plan where dental implants will best be placed for long-term success.

Surgery Day: How Long Does the Procedure Take?

For most patients, the actual surgical procedure takes approximately 3–5 hours.

The exact time depends on several factors, including:

  • Whether any remaining teeth need to be removed
  • Your individual anatomy
  • Whether one or both arches are being treated
  • The complexity of your case

The actual "surgery" component of that time is much less—usually only an hour or two. Many patients choose sedation, allowing them to sleep comfortably through most of the procedure. Much of the allotted time is for sedation, administering anesthetic, recovery from sedation, and fabrication and delivery of the teeth after surgery has been completed.

Will I Leave With Teeth?

Yes! One of the biggest advantages of All-on-4 dental implants is that, in many cases, you'll leave with a fixed set of temporary teeth attached to your implants the very same day. This "Teeth in a Day" approach lets you smile, speak, and enjoy daily life while your implants heal. While your temporary teeth look great, you'll still need to follow your dentist's dietary guidelines as the implants integrate with your jawbone.

What Is Recovery Like?

Many patients are pleasantly surprised to find that recovery is easier than they expected. While everyone heals differently, here's a typical timeline.

The First 24 Hours

After surgery, it's normal to experience:

  • Mild bleeding
  • Swelling
  • Jaw soreness
  • Fatigue from sedation

Plan on resting for the remainder of the day. Ice packs and prescribed medications help keep you comfortable.

Days 2–3

This is usually when swelling reaches its peak. You may also notice:

  • Mild bruising
  • Tightness in the jaw
  • Tenderness

These symptoms are temporary and generally begin improving after the third day.

The First Week

By the end of the first week, many patients are:

  • Feeling much more comfortable
  • Speaking more naturally
  • Returning to light daily activities
  • Adjusting to their new smile

Many people with desk jobs return to work within several days, depending on how they feel and the type of work they do.

What Can I Eat?

Your implants need time to bond with your jawbone through a natural process called osseointegration. We can fix and repair many things, but one thing we cannot fix is a patient overdoing it and chewing their new implants loose. We give specific food recommendations to guide you.

During healing, you'll enjoy:

  • Smoothies
  • Yogurt
  • Eggs
  • Mashed potatoes
  • Pasta
  • Fish
  • Soups
  • Other soft foods

Although your temporary teeth are securely attached, avoiding hard or crunchy foods helps protect your implants while they heal. Full healing typically takes 3–4 months, and once your final teeth are made, you'll be able to eat anything you want.

When Will I Get My Final Teeth?

After your implants have fully integrated with the bone, you'll return for your final custom porcelain teeth. These visits include further planning, photography, and bite analysis to optimize the final product—and they're easy and pain-free. No shots, no drilling.

For most patients, this occurs approximately 3–5 months after surgery.

Your permanent bridge is crafted to provide:

  • Exceptional strength
  • Beautiful esthetics
  • Comfortable function
  • Long-lasting durability

Does All-on-4 Hurt?

This is one of the most common concerns we hear. During the procedure, you'll be comfortable thanks to local anesthesia and sedation. After surgery, most patients describe the discomfort as manageable and often compare it to having multiple teeth removed. Many are surprised that recovery is easier than they anticipated, especially compared with living with painful or failing teeth.

Why Patients Love All-on-4

Patients often choose All-on-4 because it offers:

  • A fixed alternative to removable dentures
  • Fewer implants than traditional full-mouth reconstruction
  • Same-day temporary teeth for many cases
  • Improved chewing ability
  • A natural-looking smile
  • Increased confidence
