What are dental implants?

If you have damaged, broken, or missing teeth, and are looking for the perfect solution to give you a beautiful smile, then dental implants may be right for you. At East Peoria Dental we offer many different restorative procedures, but one of the most common is dental implants. Implants are a permanent solution, and are durable and reliable.

Implants function like our natural teeth, and allow patients to eat and speak normally. They are comfortable in the mouth and look natural.

Implants act as an artificial tooth root and are made of a durable material called titanium. They act similar to a screw that is placed in the jawbone. The implant provides the base for one or more artificial teeth known as crowns. In order to ensure proper support for the implant is present, the patient must have enough bone in the jaw. As part of our evaluation, we will determine if the patient has enough bone present in the jaw to support the implants properly. If needed, bone grafting can be done where synthetic bone is added to the area to provide the needed support.

Healing time is required to allow the bone to fuse to the implant. This process is called osseointegration, and this creates a strong base for the implant. This process allows the implant to function like a natural tooth in the mouth.

Once the healing process is complete, a connector or abutment is set on top of the implant to hold the crown in place. Custom crowns are made to match the color, shape, and size of your natural teeth. Temporary crowns may be used until the permanent crowns are ready.

Benefits of dental implants:

  • Preserves the natural bone in the mouth and helps to stimulate new bone growth.
  • Provides long term value financially.
  • Implants are permanent and do not click or slip like other solutions such as dentures or bridges.
  • Implants look and feel natural in the mouth.
  • With proper care and good oral hygiene, implants can last upwards of 25 years or a lifetime.

Is Invisalign faster than braces?

Invisalign is a great alternative to braces that uses clear, BPA free aligners that are worn for a specific period of time to straighten crooked or uneven teeth.

The clear aligners are smooth and comfortable, and they can be removed for cleaning and eating easily.

Typically, the aligners are worn anywhere between 20-22 hours a day, and this varies per patient. Depending on the level of correction needed, Invisalign can take anywhere between 6-18 months to correct teeth.

Many wonder if Invisalign is a faster treatment compared to braces. The average time for Invisalign is right in line with the length of time braces are typically worn. In some instances, Invisalign is worn for a shorter amount of time compared to braces, so this treatment can be faster in some cases.

Our team at East Peoria Dental will meet with each patient to get to know them and discuss their goals. We want to make sure each patient is comfortable with the treatment chosen, and knows what to expect every step of the way. Molds, photos, and x-rays will be taken to help build a customized treatment plan for each patient.

We want our patients to be excited about the process towards straighter teeth and a beautiful smile.
